It had been a long, long time since Mei last lingered in a harshly-lit hospital waiting room. The plastic seating could scarcely be described as ergonomic and the little adventurer shifted and squirmed, trying to find a comfortable position. Her discomfort ran deeper than the physical however, haunted as she was by the vague and unsettling memory of being pulled from cryostasis. Here, in this clinical setting, she couldn’t hope to escape the ghosts of friends and colleagues who persisted in the shadowy peripheries of her mind. Mei recalled her alarm, awakening to find herself surrounded by strangers, whose voices boomed and echoed as though underwater. The pale Antarctic light was dazzling, the sting of her rescuers’ needles bright and hot, the taste of tablets bitter on her tongue. More than that, she remembered later asking to make peace with those who did not survive.

With a blanket draped over her narrow shoulders, she had padded her way into the cold storeroom, newly made into a makeshift morgue. Her friends were swaddled too, sheets drawn up over their still-thawing remains. MacReady’s capable, engineering hands had turned black, his strong fingers knotted and gnarled, as though he had died in terrible pain. Frost had eaten its way into Opara’s face, the woman’s ground-breaking technology failing her in the hour of greatest need; her lips had deteriorated, receding to reveal sneering teeth that, until then, Mei had only seen when the kind-hearted woman smiled wide and joyful.

Despite the heat of the crowded waiting area, Mei’s face paled. This entire ward seemed to be dedicated to the newcomers to this strange place – to Kadath, she corrected herself inwardly. The researcher had already removed her utility belt and thick gloves, stuffing them unceremoniously into the huge backpack that sat on the floor, propped against her heavy winter boots. Snowball chirped happily in her lap, content with being petted and seemingly oblivious to his creator’s sorrow.

It was almost a relief when she was called. The medical check proved extensive and invasive, though undeniably necessary. Mei’s medical history was diligently recorded by the attending physician, a haggard and exhausted-looking young man whose feverish scrawl – when the climatologist stole a cheeky peek at his notes – appeared barely legible. Still, she could decipher recordings of her height and weight, the latter falling at the upper end of the healthy range for an Asian woman. It was to be expected, when one combined a strong body with considerable curves and a love of food.

The physician nodded along when she explained she had previously suffered a fracture of her right femur, a concussion and several broken ribs after suffering a fall climbing Mount Hua. It had been years ago, and never caused any lasting issues save for the occasional dull ache in her thigh when stormy weather rolled in. He frowned when she detailed how she had spent almost a decade in cryostasis but, after asking a few questions, seemed to take the newcomer at her word. Bloods were then drawn and Mei was sent back to the waiting area with a white plaster in the crux of her elbow and lurid pink lollipop in hand – she had asked for one, undeterred by the fact that they were normally reserved for younger patients. Which indicated to her that it wasn’t only adults who found themselves pulled into Kadath.

The examination had distracted Mei’s attention from morbid thoughts and so she sat in relative contentment, enjoying the fruity taste of the candy while her eyes skimmed curiously over those around her, wondering idly where they had all come from. After a time, her gaze was drawn towards a large noticeboard on the wall. It was adorned with posters and print-offs, advertising various services and clinics, as well as detailing the hospital staff active this shift. It would have proved unremarkable, and something worth little more than a passing glance, if Mei’s earthy shades hadn’t snagged on a familiar name: Dr. Angela Ziegler.

Hope and excitement blossomed within Mei and she immediately jumped on her feet, just as the overworked doctor peered around his office door, informing the climatologist of something she already knew – that her results were clear – and that she was free to leave. Where her original plan had been to go to one of the hostels that accommodated newcomers until they established themselves in Kadath, to shower and rest and try to feel normal again, the name on the noticeboard had changed everything.

Slinging her burdensome backpack over her shoulder, Mei plucked the lollipop from her mouth to beam at the little blue android who hovered in the air at her side. “We have to check, we have to be sure.” Snowball couldn’t read, and thus couldn’t possibly know what his creator meant by that, but still warbled excitedly. With a cheerful giggle, the little adventurer took her leave of the claustrophobic waiting room, and began her exploration of the hospital’s clinical and bustling corridors.

I'm sure there is a reasonable scientific explanation for this

It was wild here, all shades of grey and glacial blue. The rising wind was bitter and cold enough to cut, bringing a flush of colour to the little adventurer’s cheeks as she trudged through the growing storm, powder snow crunching beneath her fur-trimmed boots. Every laborious step brought the researcher closer to her destination – a small settlement on the remote Himalayan mountainside – and caused the twin ice axes that hung at her hips to click metallically.

Tendrils of dark brown hair came loose, fluttering and flying around her face. “Khye ran jel-ne ga-po joong,” Mei recited cheerfully, breathlessly, practising her Tibetan as she hooked the unruly locks behind an ear. She enjoyed mingling with nomads; it was an opportunity to immerse herself in a new culture, a chance to dabble in a new language and to listen to the wisdom of elders.

The sinking sun dimmed, before being swallowed by swift-travelling clouds – but there was more to the failing light than a shift in weather alone. Black fluid spotted on the virgin snow before her, blooming like inky, inexplicable flowers. Mei blinked her wide brown eyes in confusion, coming to a sudden halt. “Zhè shì shénme?” The question –
what is this? – was uttered aloud in her native Chinese, curiosity overriding any immediate sense of fear. The earth is bleeding, was Mei’s last thought before she was consumed by darkness. There was no sense of movement, or of travel, but rather of being suspended blind and weightless in an endless void.

“You are the Artic Sun.
This world needs more minds like yours;
Ready to question, to dissect, to learn.
Mind your step, however--
Knowledge is power,
And power will corrupt.”

It was impossible to say where the voice came from, whether from some exterior source or from somewhere within the recesses of her own mind. And then, quite suddenly, Mei opened her eyes to a landscape far, far removed from the Himalayan Mountains. This – here – was some dreary urban centre in the depth of night. The buildings were unfamiliar; dark, unloved and oppressive in the gloom.

Mei hadn’t realised she was holding her breath until her lungs began to ache and burn. She exhaled tremulously and, for a long moment, did not move. Soft, mizzling rain fell, dissolving the fat flakes of snow that still clung to her thick coat, washing away evidence of the world she had unknowingly left. The researcher was well acquainted with teleportation technology, though not in the form she had just been exposed to. Her heart knocked against her ribs as she took a few steps back, moving away from the cracked black tarmac of the road to huddle against the stained wall of the closest building, its dark and broken windows staring like unseeing eyes. “Snowball…?” Mei spoke quietly to her drone, which perched contentedly on her backpack. At the familiar sound of the device’s chirping and whirring, the researcher relaxed a little, her narrow shoulders rounding as tension bled from them.

At least she wasn’t alone.

ABOUT

Originally hailing from the Overwatch universe, Mei is a plucky researcher with intelligence in spades, as well as a naturally inquisitive and cheerful personality. At 5’4”, she is rather diminutive when compared to many others, though of a perfectly average height in her native China.

‹ FRIENDS ›

Mei revels in friendship and really is rather easy to befriend. Those in her circle, whether nearest and dearest or merely acquainted, will be showered in attention. This could prove overwhelming to some, as Mei is talkative, expressive and ever enthusiastic. In many ways, her tendency to be perceptive and physically affectionate (and to give frequent, thoughtful gifts) mirrors her behaviour in romantic relationships and could be misinterpreted on occasion. Ultimately, Mei has much to offer her friends, and will prove herself a loyal, loving and sincere companion.

‹ ENEMIES ›

Despite the researcher’s sweet, gentle nature, she is not above holding grudges or making enemies. Those who belittle or harm others – whether robotic or human – are sure to antagonise her.

‹ ROMANCE ›

When it comes to romance, it’s possible for anyone – of any gender or biological sex, or of robotic, organic or magical origin – to find their way into this woman’s warm heart. Mei has a tendency of wearing that same heart on her sleeve, which means it’s difficult, almost impossible, for her to disguise feelings of attraction. Cue the blushing and the li’l researcher losing her cool. I prefer romantic developments to occur naturally through threading, but I’m certainly not opposed to having ideas bounced off me.

‹ IDEAS ›

• A scientist enlists Mei to collaborate on research.
• While exploring, Mei bumps into someone. Literally.
• A person shows interest in Mei’s drone, Snowball.
• Mei misplaces her journal and a good soul returns it.
• There’s always room for a research assistant!

In 2015 – after four long and painful decades – China abolished its one-child policy. Yet almost sixty years later, despite great steps towards gender equality and acceptance, there remained a deeply ingrained cultural preference for male heirs. Orphanages struggled to care for unwanted and abandoned children, those unfortunate souls who had arrived into the world disabled, impoverished, imperfect or biologically female. Times had changed, technology had advanced, but some societal elements remained painfully unaltered. The dying rooms were fewer and further between but otherwise still operated, crying infants and dull-eyed youths now overseen by detached, robotic caregivers.

Mei knows she is very lucky, in this regard.

An only child, she was born into a moderately wealthy family in Xi’an. More than that, she was wanted. Desperately so, in fact. Her mother and father – an engineer and a biologist respectively – both doted on and encouraged their hard-conceived daughter. It is from them that Mei has inherited her strong work ethic, curious mind and profound love of the natural world. Yet in the darkest recesses of her heart, she understands how fortunate she is, and has seen first-hand a flicker behind cold eyes when they first learn that her father has sired only a single daughter. To closed minds, it is a terrible shame that a revered man of such intelligence has no lasting legacy.

The youngest member of the Zhou family pushed aside critical opinions – they were fuel to her inner fire, igniting in the girl a desire to prove herself as capable as any son – and she genuinely enjoyed her childhood. Countless days were spent in the urban sprawl of central China, as well as exploring the rolling plains and mountains of the region. Out there, she was a hiker, climber and adventurer. During these early days, Mei thrived in keeping journals, meticulously filling blank, creamy pages with sketches and scrawled observations made of flowers, wildlife and the landscape. While scientifically minded and coolly logical, her flair for art was as undeniable as her proficiency in language, having been raised to speak both Mandarin and English. Diligent and studious, Mei excelled at school and university, with environmental science becoming her passion and thus her primary academic focus. By the time she was in her early twenties, Mei began specialising in the study of abnormal climate phenomena, particularly in relation to its effects on the world’s ecosystems. This led her to commence development on various means of climate and weather manipulation. Not bad for a girl, huh?

Her brilliance in the field saw her being selected by Overwatch to participate in an exclusive, multi-year initiative whose purpose was to monitor the world’s dramatically changing climate. Mei was summarily stationed at the Antarctica eco-Watchpoint. Their base was small, equipped with cutting edge technology and lacking in many homely comforts, yet the resulting claustrophobia only bolstered the sense of camaraderie amongst the crew. For several long, productive months, this remote location was home to Mei, her colleagues acting as a motley and makeshift family.

When a fierce, long-lived storm cut the scientists off from the outside world, they were forced to ration their supplies. With no sign of impending rescue and their food dwindling to life-threatening levels, the group entered voluntary cryostasis. Suspended in cryogenic hibernation, Mei would be revived almost a decade later, only to learn that her colleagues – Adams, Arrhenius, Opara and Torres – had all perished due malfunctioning equipment and that she alone was the sole survivor. This profound loss and second chance at life has seen the scientist galvanised into improving the very technology that failed them.

The world had changed a great deal during these years, with Overwatch now disbanded and all the eco-Watchpoints abandoned. Undeterred, the plucky climatologist continued her work, travelling the world and recording her findings in various journals – including one online, which garnered quite a following. She visited the Arctic and elsewhere, and was in the Himalayas when she was brought to the world in which she now resides.

Mei possesses an endothermic blaster that operates on two main settings. One emits a steady, short-range beam of frost while the other shoots icicle-like shards at high speed and medium range. It has a reload time of 1.5 seconds. It should be noted that Mei is not a naturally combative person and only draws her weapon when negotiation proves an unviable option.

The blaster described above can also be used to raise temporary ice walls some eight metres high. These act as a defensive measure and are short-lived, as their sudden exposure to liveable temperatures means they soon shatter and melt away.

A setting on the weapon allows Mei to surround herself with ice, inducing a state of cryostasis. At present, the scientist lacks the technology to suspend organic life in cryostasis for a prolonged period, but this is something she is keen to develop.

Last of all, Snowball – her weather manipulation drone and pet of sorts – can be deployed to consume a small area in a brief, brutal blizzard. There is a significant cool-down time between uses, as this measure uses much of Snowball’s charge.

Mei’s most obvious strength lies in her intelligence and unquenchable thirst for knowledge and understanding. She is a brilliant scientist capable of thinking creatively, possessing a keen attention to detail and an uncanny ability to recall minute details and facts. This intelligence is primarily scientific in nature, though Mei also demonstrates a flair for language and even art, to a lesser degree. Ever enthusiastic, loyal and hardworking, there is a thick streak of perfectionism and fixation that runs through her, as reflected in her research, which means she takes failure to heart. Physically she is delicate – standing at only 5’4” and with a build that does not lend itself to strength – and suffers from significant shortsightedness, which requires her to wear glasses. Mei’s personality is also gentle; she is meek, quick to apologise and to doubt herself.
